Oh God - what have I been up to lately? Writing my column in Music Connection - trying to keep up on what is happening in music not only on the net, not only in LA, but in things in general. As I mentioned in my last column, I am seriously pondering whether the days of guitar, bass and drum bands are over. Groups seem to come and go faster than dotcoms and it has been a while since there has been a real relevant trend. Having said that, I have still been scoping out electronica bands. Caught Pepe Deluxe at Sugar in Santa Monica (and earlier that week on KCRW) and found them to be thoroughly entertaining. The band consists of DJ Slow, Ja-Jazz and James Spectrum and they hail from Finland. What with big beat sampling, scratching and triggered percussion, they had the place goin' off. Apparently, they had a jump-start by the British press and got Radio One airplay in London by none other than Giles Peterson and John Peel. Although not earth shattering, these guys are certainly worth checking out the next time they pass through. Also got a chance to see Coldplay at the Mayan. I have to say, their show reminded me of the days when a band could carry their weight and capture your attention. I found Chris Martin (leader and vocalist) to be an all around talented guy. Between his vocal and instrumental performance and his rather low key yet engaging stage presence, he and the band seem to take the audience to a place not found in most performances of today. Elegant guitar lines, solid rhythm section - to my mind, they have what it takes to not only keep the spark of rock alive, but also have a chance at real longevity. Opening for them was the Australian band Powderfinger. This band is a rather perplexing one to me. Having heard their single "My Happiness" on KROQ here in LA, I was initially looking forward to seeing them. Their sound seemed to hearken back to the melodic pop bands of the '60's and '70's. Although they did have some good hook-laden material, I found their performance to be on the somewhat lackluster side. It wasn't until later though, that I received the entire CD. And I have to say, I really enjoyed listening to it. I guess the lesson here is if it comes down to paying for a live ticket or going out and quaffing their CD, I would opt for the latter. Speaking of which... There is a movement afoot in Australia entitled "Charm Rock." And apparently, the aforementioned band would be considered a just member. The movement stems from Brisbane, which is the capitol of the state of Queensland. It boasts some of the most beautiful scenery in the world - hence the city's background in giving birth to such a lofty hybrid and style of music. CR also purports to being somewhat of a backlash against the violence-ridden rock currently permeating the charts. Another band fitting the mold is Charming Tigers. They supposedly have a groundswell with the university set. Remember, you heard it here first! |
